Plastic surgery is a surgical procedure to restore, reconstruct, or alter any part of the human body.
Sushruta, one of the earliest surgeons of the recorded history (600 BC) is believed to be the first individual to describe plastic surgery. Sushruta vividly described the basic principles of plastic surgery in his famous ancient treatise “Sushruta Samhita”. Sushruta Samhita is considered to be one of the most comprehensive and foundational text of Ayurveda and ancient surgery. The Sushruta Samhita’s most well-known contribution to plastic surgery is the reconstruction of the nose, known also as Rhinoplasty.
Sushruta who was credited with being the father of plastic surgery. His books and teachings originally in Sanskrit, were translated into the Arabic language which eventually made their way to Europe centuries later.
